Navalny is the Russian opposition leader and an anti-corruption activist. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020.

He founded the anti-corruption foundation in 2011 to investigate and expose corrupt officials.

He has a YouTube channel where most recently he brought to light

Last year, he was poisoned during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow. He was medically evacuated to Berlin. On 2 September 2020, the German government announced that Navalny was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent, from the same family of nerve agents that was used to poison Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury UK in 2018.

The diagnosis was published by Charité and backed up by the OPCW.

He made the news in December after he duped a Russian spy into revealing how he was poisoned, as reported by CNN who participated in the investigation.

Navalny returned on 17 January 2021 to Russia, where he was immediately detained and imprisoned for 30 days.

He faces charges in multiple other cases. The Guardian puts it like this:

"What happens to Vladimir Putin’s opponent after his arrest depends on what officials think they can get away with"
